Love in the Age of Coronavirus

If you're in love at the moment, or embroiled in some kind of long-distance romance, then I've got a list of required viewing for you. Here are some great films about romance, at your fingertips. Hulu has the best selection.

NETFLIX

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR (2013), a colorful French lesbian romance, overflowing with soul (and sex scenes).

HER (2013), a rose-tinted Spike Jonze film about love in the virtual age. Ahead of its time, Her is the perfect romance for 2020.

BLUE JAY (2016), a gorgeous black-and-white romance that will bring you to tears in its consideration of the passage of time.

DUCK BUTTER (2018), a 24-hour whirlwind romance that boasts two great performances from Alia Shawkat and Laia Costa.

TRAMPS (2017), a criminally underseen little indie about two young New Yorkers, with no one else, who find each other in their mutual search of an important suitcase.

IBIZA: LOVE DRUNK (2017), a sweet and genuinely hilarious little Netflix original about Americans finding love whilst partying in Ibiza.

CHASING AMY (1997), a romantic comedy that blurs sexuality lines and asks some hard-hitting questions about your partner's baggage.

AMAZON PRIME

ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953), the charming story of a princess running around Rome with a handsome reporter. Emphasis on charming!

THE BIG SICK (2017), love is tested in a new couple's relationship when one goes into a coma. One of the most intelligent, modern romantic comedies.

HULU

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (2019), perhaps the best film on this list, this tale of yearning is so heartachingly performed and impeccably made.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (2018), Barry Jenkins' less-talked-about follow-up to Moonlight is romance at it's most beautifully photographed.

SAY ANYTHING... (1989), a film that at once feels very 80s and incredibly timeless, Say Anything... will remind you of what it's like to fall in love for the first time.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989), written with wit in abundance, this 80s romance is some of acclaimed writer Nora Ephron's best work.

LET THE SUNSHINE IN (2017), a brilliant film that tackles romance in your later years, Claire Denis has never made a more sentimental picture.

NON-FICTION (2019), another talky French film (like Let the Sunshine In), this one features a more messy portrait of love -- that isn't any less truthful and honest.

BPM (BEATS PER MINUTE) (2017), a tragic and hopelessly romantic portrait of queer love in the 80s, in the midst of AIDS.
